Welcome to Edition 1 of Crafted!

Hi there,

Welcome to the first issue of the Crafted newsletter! I'm thrilled to launch this newsletter and share my curated insights with you every week.

In these interesting times, I believe it's more important than ever to stay curious and get your kicks from even the smallest thing.

it's been a while since I've written a newsletter so it might take a little time for me to get into the swing of things (like design!) but I'll do my best!

Here are my recommendations for this week:

Looking for something to read?

I finally compiled my list of top reads from 2023.

Things to read today

Thinx promised a feminist utopia to everyone but its employees (Vox). I can never think of Thinx without this article about their marketing efforts (you'll be calling everyone squirrelfran).

Six months in, journalist-owned tech publication 404 Media is profitable! (Nieman Labs). Woo hoo!

Whatever happened to mad cow disease?(Gizmodo). This is also a great book about prion diseases.

Some hydrogen car owners are still waiting for the future to arrive (Wired). Seeing the state of hydrogen cell refuelling in Europe, I'm not surprised.

From holographics to 5G black boxes: startups take centre stage at MWC/4YFN 2024 (Tech.eu)

The worst possible way to be rejected for a job. (Slate).

What are you watching?

I'm currently in the weeds of True Detective and I'm planning to see Zone of interest sometime over the weekend or early next week.

Five podcasts you should listen to

Better offline: a deep dive into the tech industry’s influence and manipulation of society

Blame it on the fame: Milli Vanilli (lol)

The Lady Vanishes: I've been listening to this podcast since 2019 and there was finally a coronial inquest into the disapperance of Marion Barter this week.

Shocking, Heartbreaking, Transformative: defiinitely worth a listen for any aspiring documentary markers.

Swindled: true stories of white-collar criminals, con artists, and corporate evil.

Arty things

When architecture becomes art.

Do you use your job title when you introduce yourself?

Recently, “job titles don’t matter” was trending on social media. The loudest voices seemed to be tech bros who didn’t feel they needed a title to be successful. Here's a great thread about why, in fact, they do matter.

Hi there, Welcome to the tenth issue of the Crafted newsletter! I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend! I got back really late from London last night after our Tech.eu Summit. It was a well-run event with some really fantastic speakers, and I also loved the opportunity to catch up with people in person. That said, my brain is now rather fried and requires some quiet time sitting on the balcony reading. I'm heading off to Estonia on Tuesday for Latitude (and a few days off) if anyone would...
